Independent Novel Study
We will be starting our independent novel studies this week. Students in the afternoon class began their novel study on Thursday. How this novel study works is students were asked to split their novels up into 6 chunks. Between now and March Break, students have activities to complete while they read their novels. There are questions and tasks that they are to complete after finishing each "chunk" of their novel. When they have completed the text, they are to pick 2 assignments from the list that has been given to them to complete. All the details for this novel study are being sent home in their novel study folders. They will not be given class time to complete this task so it is expected to all be done as homework over the next few weeks. They may bring their novels to school and read them during silent reading time or as a task once they have finished their class work. Students are encouraged to come and see me throughout the process if they have any questions.

This week in Math  ...
We will be continuing to work on strategies to solve multiplication and division math problems. Students are encouraged to be practicing this at home. Students in grade 5 need to be able to multiply two-digit whole numbers by two-digit whole numbers, using estimation, student-generated algorithms, and standard algorithms. They also need to be able to divide three-digit whole numbers by one-digit whole numbers, using concrete materials, estimation, student-generated algorithms, and standard algorithms.

This week in Language ...
We will be continuing to work on our literacy centers where students are completing reading comprehension tasks as well as writing tasks. Students will be continuing with their personal narrative writing as well.

Have a great week and I hope everyone has a fantastic family day long weekend!
